Outdoor Space Builders Reports Rising Demand for Engineered Shade Structures

Outdoor Space Builders has reported increased homeowner interest in engineered shade structures following a summer in which Connecticut activated its Extreme Hot Weather Protocol on multiple occasions, including a statewide activation from July 14 through July 16, 2026, during which cooling centers were opened across the state.

The protocol was also activated earlier in the month during a separate period of elevated temperatures. State guidance during these activities directs residents toward designated cooling locations and advises limiting outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.

A second factor is changing the amount of shade available on residential properties across the state. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reported in 2026 that forest pests and diseases are increasing the number of dead and dying trees across Connecticut, raising the vulnerability of the state’s forests. The department has also described Connecticut’s risk profile as shifting, with climate change contributing to more extreme weather patterns that can include drier conditions, hotter temperatures and stronger winds.

For homeowners, the practical result is that mature trees which once shaded a yard cannot be assumed to remain standing indefinitely, and built structures increasingly carry a function that established canopy used to provide without any planning at all.

“Shade used to be something people added at the end if the budget allowed,” said Joe Mastersanti, Co-Owner of Outdoor Space Builders. “Now it comes up in the first conversation. A yard that gets full afternoon sun and has lost a couple of large trees is a different design problem than the same yard was ten years ago.”

Adjustable systems address the variability directly. Louvered pergolas use movable louvers in place of a fixed roof, allowing the covering to be opened for light and airflow, angled to cut direct sun without closing the space in, or closed to shed rain. Fixed-cover structures serve a different requirement. The company builds cabanas with manual louvered roofs and fixed privacy walls, which address overhead sun and a neighboring sightline at the same time. Gazebos are offered in Victorian, traditional, modern, Asian-inspired and custom styles, and in wood, PVC, fiberglass, composite and metal. Because a gazebo is freestanding and does not attach to the house, it can be placed where a yard is genuinely pleasant rather than only where a door happens to open.

Carports extend the same principle to vehicles, using flat roof construction with insulated panels, built-in gutters that direct runoff rather than allowing it to sheet off the edges, and adjustable height to accommodate taller vehicles.

Enclosed structures extend usability further into the year. Screened-in porches keep insects out while remaining open to air movement, and porch enclosures convert an existing covered porch rather than requiring construction from the ground up. Sunrooms and four-season rooms are built as conditioned space, which changes both the structural requirements and the permitting path.

Orientation determines much of the outcome, Mastersanti said. West-facing outdoor areas take the strongest afternoon exposure, and an identical structure performs differently depending on where it sits, how the surrounding grade falls, and how much tree cover remains on the property. The company’s process includes an initial design consultation and three-dimensional renderings produced before construction begins, followed by permit acquisition, site preparation, foundation and framing work, construction, and a final inspection and walkthrough.

Homeowners considering a structure over an existing deck or patio face an additional consideration. Attachment to an existing structure depends on how that structure was originally framed and what load it was designed to carry, which is a question answered on site rather than from a catalog. A covering that a new build would accommodate without difficulty may require reinforcement, or a freestanding alternative, when it is added years after the original construction.

Permitting for structures of this kind is handled at the municipal level in Connecticut, with each town’s building department setting its own requirements and inspection sequence. Outdoor Space Builders handles permit acquisition as part of its build process across the communities it serves.

Material selection carries through to the surfaces beneath these structures as well. The company installs composite and PVC decking, both of which avoid the staining and sealing schedule that exposed wood surfaces require. Composite boards combine wood fiber and plastic, while PVC contains no wood content at all.
